Day 2 – God Keeps His Promise
Read
Psalm 89:1-52
Psalm 89 records Israel’s response to what seemed like a broken promise of God. In 2 Samuel 7, God declared that King David’s rule would last forever. But when Babylon defeated the nation of Israel, the people were taken captive into a foreign land, and it seemed that God’s Word was worthless. When the world was at its worst, God was at work, making way for the King of kings.
Unlike people, God never breaks a promise. Psalm 145:13 says, “The Lord is faithful to ALL His promises and love toward ALL He has made.” Jesus came to this world and became sin, that we might become the righteousness of God. God is in the business of putting things back “right.” Although it may not look exactly like it did before, God is always at work, working through the obedient cooperation of His children. Imagine if Mary had said no to the angel, when approached about carrying the Messiah in her womb. Or if Joseph had turned his back on her and abandoned his promise to marry her. The very story of Christmas is God on display – making good on His Word.
Reflect:
- Has someone ever broken an important promise to you? How did you feel?
- Is there a promise or commitment you have made to God or to someone, that it’s time to “make good” on?
