Luke 1:37

We do not often find ourselves in impossible situations. Most of the time, we see a path through the difficulty. But what do we do when our situation proves impossible? When Gabriel announces his astonishing message, we learn how Mary handles the impossible.

“For nothing will be impossible with God.” – Luke 1:37

The angel Gabriel has just told Mary that she will give birth to the Son of God while still a virgin- a scenario that seems humanly impossible. Likely, you haven’t been in a situation quite as dramatic, but we all face challenges daily, some that seem to have no viable solution. Here, we get to see Mary’s remarkable response and an attitude that we, too, can emulate. Instead of focusing on the impossibility of the situation, she chose to trust the One who was speaking. The words in verse 37 remind us that no circumstance, no problem, nothing that seems like an obstacle to us, is too difficult for God to handle. Mary didn’t know how God would accomplish His plan, but she trusted that He would.

This is a very different response to the seemingly impossible than Zechariah has just a few lines up in verse 18 when he learns his wife will bear a son in her old age. He says, “How can I be sure of this?” We see Zechariah question if God *can* accomplish what He promised. Mary’s question, “How will this be?” in verse 34 is filled with curiosity and faith that God will do what He said. Mary trusted in God’s power, even when she couldn’t understand the specifics.

When we encounter moments in life that feel impossible, do we, like Mary, trust God’s ability to work in ways beyond our imagination? Or do we, like Zechariah, question what God can do? What are you facing that seems impossible right now? Is it a tough financial season? Does the diagnosis seem hopeless? Are you struggling in a difficult relationship? Whatever impossible situation you are facing, God wants us to surrender our fears and doubts to Him. His power is limitless, and His love is perfect. Mary found peace trusting God’s promise and her faith opened the door to experiencing His miraculous works. We can also find peace in knowing that the God of the impossible is with us, working in every situation.

Reflect:

  • How do you usually handle difficult situations?
  • When you face an impossible situation, how can you shift your focus from the limitations you see to the power of God?
