Day 7 – Is The Easy Thing The Right Thing?

Matthew 1:18-25

We learn a few things about Joseph in this passage. First that he was considered to be a righteous man in the town and among his peers. We see this in his reaction to hearing Mary’s news, that she was pregnant, which was not to publicly shame her, but to “divorce her quietly”.

We also see that Joseph was not quick to act, but rather took time to think about their situation and reflect on what the best course of action would be. God took advantage of this reflection time to send Joseph a message through a dream.

The message from God was clear to Joseph, do not be afraid to do what I am asking of you. To Joseph everything about his situation looked wrong from the outside, but God was asking him to follow His plan and not be afraid of what others might think of him and his family.

Joseph had to be willing to sacrifice part of his pride to follow Gods plan for him. He knew people would judge him for sticking with Mary. People would talk, and few would believe the incarnate truth. Joseph followed God’s plan for his future by de-centering himself and lifting up another’s central place.

What’s easy is not always right. And what’s right is not always easy. Take time to reflect today about what God might be asking of you this season.

Reflect:

  • What could God be calling you to that others in your life might view as different or wrong?
  • What is one thing this week you can do to de-center yourself and re-center your life around God?
