Day 9 – We Are Gifted But Humble
Read
Luke 1:46-56
The most important difference between being humble or prideful lies in our response. In today’s passage, we witness Mary’s response to Elizabeth, who tells her, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” (Luke 1:42). Mary responds with a song of praise and worship, recognizing the significance of the moment and, ultimately, who deserves the credit. This song, known as “The Magnificat,” means “my soul magnifies the Lord.”
Mary is carrying the future Savior of the world in her womb; she is about to become the mother of the special child who will be a gift to all humanity. But instead of focusing on her unique role as something to wear as a prideful badge of being godly enough, she turns the spotlight to God, praising Him for His work.
She speaks of His faithfulness (v. 48), power (v. 49), holiness (v. 49), and mercy (v. 50). These are attributes that Mary deeply appreciates as she recognizes how blessed she is to serve a God whose plans are far greater than her own.
Mary could not conceal the calling God had placed on her life, and she responds in the right way. It’s not a response of pride, but of humble recognition of God’s special favor and mighty work.
Reflect:
- How can you train your heart to have the proper response of humility instead of pride?
- Where are some opportunities in your life to turn the spotlight towards God?
- Take time to write out some attributes of God (or use some of the attributes from the passage) to recognize the work God is doing in your life right now.
