Surrendered Hearts First

  -

And they did this not just as we had hoped, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and to us by the will of God. (2 Corinthians 8:5)

True worship begins with surrendered hearts, just as the Macedonians first gave themselves fully to the Lord before their remarkable generosity flowed.

As we deepen our commitment to the Overflow Initiative, we’re inspired by the Macedonian believers in 2 Corinthians 8. Their generosity wasn’t just about money—it began with a profound surrender: giving themselves first to the Lord. True giving flows from hearts fully belonging to God, recognizing that everything we have is His gift.

This surrender impacts every area of life, not just finances. Here are practical ways to live it out:

Spend time in prayer and Scripture to align your heart with God’s. Start your day with a prayer of surrender, seeking His guidance.

Evaluate your priorities: What takes first place—work, personal desires? Reorder them to put God’s kingdom first, perhaps by cutting distractions and embracing spiritual disciplines.

Serve in your community or at Creekside Christian Church—through volunteering, outreach, or helping those in need. Service fosters humility and gratitude, preparing our hearts to give.

Remember, surrender includes time, talents, and resources. A great example is Creekside’s Wednesday evening programming which thrives because of the volunteers who teach, make coffee, keep us safe, clean-up – all using their gifts for God’s glory.

As we pursue the Overflow Initiative, let’s follow the Macedonians’ example: first surrender our hearts to God. This creates fertile ground for joyful, overflowing generosity. In prayer, ask Him to cultivate surrendered hearts in us, leading to worshipful giving that transforms our community and reflects His love. May our lives testify to trusting God fully—in big moments and everyday tasks alike.

Reflection:

  1. In what area of life is God currently inviting deeper surrender of your heart?
  2. How does beginning with “giving ourselves first to the Lord” change your approach to supporting the Overflow Initiative?

Prayer:

Gracious Father, Thank You for the example of the Macedonian believers who, in their deep poverty, overflowed with rich generosity because they first gave themselves fully to You. Thank You for inviting us into that same joyful surrender.

Today we surrender our hearts anew—our plans, priorities, fears, and finances—placing them entirely in Your hands. Show us any areas we’ve been holding back, and gently loosen our grip so that we trust You completely. In Jesus’ name, amen.
