Eyes Fixed on Eternal Joy
Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you… God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. (Psalm 73:25-26)
In the film “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” the aspiring race car driver Denny repeatedly teaches that “the car goes where your eyes go.” This simple principle echoes the biblical call in Hebrews 12:2 to fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith, who endured the cross for the joy set before Him. Jesus blazed the trail, lived perfectly, and sacrificed Himself, now eternally glorified at God’s right hand. In the same way, Psalm 73:25-26 declares, “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth I desire besides you… God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
When we desire Jesus above all and keep our gaze heavenward, earthly distractions lose their grip, and we begin to love, act, and give as He did. Life will not be easy, but worldly satisfactions pale beside God’s infinite joy. Like Denny, who invested his time, talents, and treasures in the next generation of drivers, we are called to use God’s Word, strength, and goodness to lead others—especially the next generation—toward that unending joy.
Remember: Your life will go where your eyes go. Keep looking heavenward, glorifying and enjoying God forever, and extend that delight to those who follow through faithful stewardship. When we fix our eyes on Jesus and the eternal joy ahead, giving toward the Overflow Initiative becomes an act of worship—investing in spaces that will help future generations keep their eyes on Him too.

Prayer:
Most holy God, You are my strength, my portion, and my greatest treasure forever. Fix my eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Fill me with such joy in You that I hold nothing back—time, talents, or resources. Use our Overflow Initiative to draw many more to fix their eyes on You for generations to come. In Jesus’ name, amen.
