Godliness with Contentment

  -

But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. (1 Timothy 6:6–10)

And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers… praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. (Acts 2:42, 47)

The Rich Fool stored earthly wealth but was not rich toward God. Paul shows us the antidote: godliness with contentment.

Spiritual growth is essential for a faithful walk with Christ. Paul warns that the love of money can lead us away from God, but godliness with contentment brings great gain. When we pursue spiritual maturity, we learn to value eternal things over temporary ones.

Think of your earthly possessions, past and present. Did any of them give you overwhelming and lasting satisfaction? Now consider your relationship with the Lord. If it does not bring you contentment and joy, perhaps there’s some needed reflection and consideration. Are you devoted to or chasing after worldly things?

The early church devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, prayer, and generosity. As a result, the Lord added to their number daily. Their spiritual growth fueled their mission, and their mission fueled their growth. Faithfulness in the small things—prayer, Scripture, community—creates a strong foundation for kingdom impact.

As we grow spiritually, we become better equipped to serve, give, and disciple others. A spiritually mature church, equipped with expanded spaces through the Overflow Initiative, becomes a powerful beacon drawing daily souls to Christ—just like the early church.

Reflection:

  1. Which spiritual habits help you stay rooted in Christ?
  2. How is God calling you to grow in faithfulness?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the great gain found in godliness with contentment. Forgive us when we chase fleeting wealth instead of eternal riches. Grow us in spiritual maturity through Your Word, prayer, and community. Use the Overflow Initiative to create spaces where Your church can devote itself to these things, so that You might add to our number daily those being saved. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Vision Night:

Join us for Vision Night on Wednesday, February 18th at 6:30 PM in the Worship Center, where we’ll share about the heart and vision of the Overflow Initiative. This is a great opportunity to hear details and ask questions. Creekside Kids will be available for children’s programming. Everyone is welcome!
