Excelling in Grace of Giving

  -

But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving. (2 Corinthians 8:7)

Having moved beyond guilt-driven giving yesterday, Paul now invites the Corinthians—and us—to let our spiritual excellence overflow into the grace of generous giving.

The actor John Barrymore once quipped, “Why is there so much month left at the end of the money?” It’s a humorous way many of us relate to the constant struggle of stretching our finances, feeling like our resources run dry long before our needs do.

Yet Paul’s words to the Corinthians challenge us to view giving not as a burden added to our shortages, but as a grace in which we can “excel.” The Corinthians were already thriving in faith, wisdom, passion, and love—spiritual abundance was evident in their lives. Paul urges them (and us) to let that same excellence overflow into generous giving.

To excel in something, requires discipline – a combination of planning, training, and effort. Perhaps you need to modify your current “training” plan. Have you encumbered your life with things that unnecessarily stretch your finances?

Exceling in giving flips the script on Barrymore’s lament. When we prioritize God’s kingdom first—trusting Him with our tithes, offerings, and help for others—we often discover that our “money” stretches further than expected. It’s not about having more at the start; it’s about surrendering what we have, watching God multiply it in ways that meet needs and bless hearts, including our own.

Reflection:

  1. In which areas of faith (speech, knowledge, earnestness) do you feel you are exceling, and how might giving be the next area for growth?
  2. What adjustments in lifestyle or priorities might free you to excel more fully in generosity?

Prayer:

Lord, teach me to excel in giving as I do in other areas of faith. Help me to prioritize generosity, not just in my finances, but in my time and attention to kingdom pursuits. Free me from the fear of “not enough” and fill me with joyful trust in Your provision. In Jesus’ name, amen.
