Choosing Greater Wealth
By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. (Hebrews 11:24-26)
Yesterday we saw that godliness with contentment guards our hearts from chasing fleeting wealth. Today, Moses models the positive choice: considering Christ’s reward greater riches than anything this world offers.
Moses had access to Egypt’s greatest treasures—power, status, comfort, and wealth. Yet he chose identification with God’s suffering people because he fixed his eyes on an eternal reward that far outweighed temporary pleasures.
We face similar choices today. The “treasures of Egypt” might look like financial security, career advancement, a larger home, or simply the comfort of holding tightly to what we have. These can feel compelling, even wise—until we see them through the lens of eternity. Many of us have faced moments where God asked us to trade temporary comfort for lasting obedience—and discovered unexpected blessing.
Choosing God’s way often requires releasing something good now for something infinitely greater later. When we invest our resources in kingdom work—like the Overflow Initiative—we declare that we value Christ’s reward above earthly gain. These expanded spaces will help countless people encounter Jesus and grow in faith, storing up treasure that will never perish.
Reflection:
- What treasures of Egypt; (comfort, status, or financial security) feel most attractive to you right now?
- How is God inviting you to release something temporary in order to invest more fully in His eternal kingdom through the Overflow Initiative?
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, help us to see beyond the treasures of this world. Grant us the strength to choose the path of sacrifice when it leads to Your glory. May our actions reflect our faith, and may we encourage one another in love and good works as we seek to build Your kingdom. We trust in the greater reward that is found in embracing Your plans and purposes. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Vision Night:
Join us for Vision Night on Wednesday, February 18th at 6:30 PM in the Worship Center, where we’ll share about the heart and vision of the Overflow Initiative. This is a great opportunity to hear details and ask questions. Creekside Kids will be available for children’s programming.
